Kingswinford million pound project into final phase

WORK on a one million pound scheme to combat sewer flooding in Kingswinford is entering its final phase.

The final stage of the scheme to replace sewer pipes, which has caused road closures in the area throughout the summer, will get under way on Saturday October 20.

To complete the work Severn Trent Water will shut a section of road between Hinsford Close and the entrance to Francis Catering on Stalling’s Lane from that date.

Adam Walker, programme engineer at Severn Trent Water, said: “Some of our sewer pipes have been serving the community for many years now and need replacing.

"In addition, changes in weather patterns mean that our older network of pipes are not large enough to cope with the overwhelming amount of rainfall we now experience, which, at times, causes sewer flooding."

The work is expected to be completed by mid-November with roads reopened by the end of October, but engineers are not ruling out longer delays if unforeseen problems are unearthed.

Adam Walker added: "We’ve worked closely with Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, the emergency services and bus companies so they’re aware of the plans.

"We’ve also communicated with businesses and residents to try to minimise disruption whilst the work is carried out. We ask motorists to be patient and allow extra time for their journeys during this time.”

It seems strange that following an earthquake in Japan a section of motorway was repaired and back in use within a week, yet these sewer repairs have necessitated the closure of this stretch of road for nearly two months! Surely all works should have been carried out in one operation. Could anyone from DMBC or the contractors explain why this second closure is necessary?
