AMBLECOTE students' work is to be at the centre of a prestigious awards ceremony for the best of the borough.

Young people at the Glasshouse College, Wollaston Road, have designed and made the trophies for the annual Dudley Volunteer Awards, which will take place at Brierley Hill Civic Hall on Thursday October 18.

The awards will feature trophies from Glasshouse College students for the second year running and each award has been individually engraved by the students.

Gail Hickman, Glasshouse College enrichment manager, said: "Glasshouse College provides a unique learning environment for young people with social behavioural and learning difficulties and this type of project is fantastic for helping to increase their confidence and self esteem.

"Not only do students get to find out about volunteers who are making a big difference in local communities, they also get to be part of presenting these people with something beautiful and unique."

Dudley's mayor, Cllr Melvyn Mottram, will be presenting the awards to community heroes, sporting champions, community safety stalwarts, inspirational young people and long serving volunteers.

The award sculptures represent flames to show how volunteers light up their communities.

Andy Gray, Dudley Council for Voluntary Service chief officer, said: “It’s been a pleasure working with Glasshouse students and staff on this project and we know that these fantastic trophies will be treasured by everyone who receives them."
