A QUIZ night at Old Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge raised £618.50 for a charity that aims to detect heart problems in young people.

The money was raised at an event organised by the school’s Parent Association in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) .

The school has been a strong supporter of the charity as its catering manager Pete Teale lost his 23-year-old daughter Zoe to sudden adult death syndrome (SADS).

He said: “The Parent Association have been very supportive.”

Since Zoe’s untimely death in 2009 Mr Teale has raised thousands of pounds to help pay for young adults to be given electrocardiogram (ECG) tests – and to date around 500 youngsters have been screened.

The Heath Lane school tests around 100 students aged 14 and over each year through its cardiac screening programme which is painless and takes about ten minutes.

Mr Teale added: “We’re the only school in the West Midlands that does these screenings.”
