AN ugly brawl in an Oldbury pub landed a man who helped keep young offenders out of further trouble in the dock.

Daniel Eggington was the only one arrested by the police after the disturbance in the George pub.

The 22-year-old, who worked for the National Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders, admitted punching Carl Cheshire who was acting as a peacemaker in the fight but denied injuring him.

Malcolm Fowler, defending, told Wolverhampton Crown Court that Eggington had picked up a chair to fend off glasses and bottles that were sailing through the air.

The fight broke out between two groups in the pub after an argument and Mr Cheshire moved in to try and cool down the situation but his actions left him nursing a fractured skull, broken nose, chipped tooth and bruising.

Recorder Abigail Nixon told Eggington, of Oliver Road, Smethwick: “You must bear some responsibility for what happened that night.

“You really should have known better than to get involved in this kind of trouble."

The Recorder added: "You are a young man who normally does a lot of good work in the community and you have been spoken of as a role model. But this was serious public disorder."

Eggington admitted affray and was sentenced to 15 months in prison suspended for two years, ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work in the community and to pay £500 costs.

Mr Fowler said Eggington, who was also barred from the pub for six months, had behaved out of character.
