RESIDENTS receiving housing benefits in Halesowen and Cradley are getting one of the best services in the country, figures have revealed.

Government statistics revealed Dudley Council was ranked second out of 36 metropolitan councils in relation to turning around new claims in 2013/14.

And the latest in-year figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions show Dudley as the country’s number one performer at dealing with new claims.

Dudley’s housing benefit staff turn new claims around in an average of 15 days while change of circumstances are now amended within eight days.

Councillor Stuart Turner, cabinet member for finance, said: “This is good news for Dudley borough residents as it ensures households in need of support with their housing costs are getting the help that is required in a timely fashion. As a community council, a high level of customer service is always a priority for us, and we will strive to continue improving this service over the coming months.”

People can apply for housing benefits if they live in the Dudley borough, are on a low income and pay rent to Dudley Council, a social landlord or a private landlord.
