STOURBRIDGE'S oldest man and lifelong Baggies fan Jack Jones scored one of his best birthday gifts ever when he was presented with a personalised team shirt by the football club's captain.

West Bromwich Albion's Darren Fletcher presented the shirt - printed with Jack 107 - and other club goodies to the sprightly centenarian after the Barclays Premier League match against Southampton on Saturday (February 28).

WBA devotee Jack, the club's oldest fan, was invited along as a special guest to The Hawthorns stadium as a belated celebration to mark his latest big birthday on February 12.

As well as the personalised shirt, retired van driver Jack was also presented with a signed football (in a mounted glass case) and a signed shirt from the players.

Darren Fletcher said: "Jack was humbled at what the club have done for him but, having chatted with him, it's we who should be humbled. What an amazing guy."

Jack's nephew Bob Goode said: "He obviously enjoyed it and they broadcast his picture on the big screens.

"He's in good spirits and fairly good health and he's been out a few times this year. He's the oldest man in the West Midlands now and the 139th oldest in the country."

Born in Enville in 1908, Jack worked as an apprentice for a greengrocer from the age of 14.

He later became a trainee mechanic at Goodwin, Foster and Brown's and during the war he helped to build aircraft at Longbridge and Castle Bromwich.

But for much of his life he worked as a long-distance commercial van driver - a job he held onto until he was 78.

Widowed in 1989 after 50 years of marriage, he continued to drive well into his advancing years - only giving up the pleasure at 96 when his licence expired.
