A COMMUNITY speed watch scheme has been out and about in Wordsley as it aims to put the brakes on speeding motorists.

Councillor Derrick Heminsgley has been teaming up with the police, members of the public and fellow councillors to zap speeding cars cruising too fast past schools in his ward.

The Labour councillor started the initiative after becoming increasingly concerned about the speed of traffic outside Belle Vue Primary, Ashwood Park Primary and Dingle Community Primary Schools.

At the latest Wordsley Community Speed Watch meeting on Thursday (April 23) evening, Cllr Hemingsley was joined by UKIP councillor Paul Brothwood.

He said: “We had a great turn to our community speed watch last night, and welcomed our new young member, 13-year-old James Callaghan. I was also pleased to welcome Cllr Brothwood.

“I have a passion and a vision that this group is making a difference for the safety of children in Wordsley.”

The meet, held in Balmoral Road between 7pm and 8.30pm, clocked 10 motorists speeding over the 30mph limit, with at least two of the drivers doing 38mph.
