SCIENCE boffins from a Halesowen school presented their projects before judges at Birmingham University, with 10-year-old Harvey Sheppard clinching first place.

The eight-strong group from Lapal Primary School were invited to the Primary Science Fair run by the university and the Ogden Trust.

The pupils, all aged nine and 10, produced science projects that were either a scientific experiment to answer a question, a scientific problem and solution, or a piece of research about an area of science that interested them.

They shared their work with other primary schoolchildren as well as a judging panel, which included science lecturers from the university and King Edwards VI Five Ways School.

Teacher Sue Taylor said the judges commented on the high level of entries submitted and she congratulated Harvey on his winning entry Is Light White?

She said: "We are really proud of our pupils for taking part in this event. They spent so much of their Easter holiday planning and preparing their projects, ensuring they were ready in time for the science fair.

“It has been a great experience for them, which enabled them to become more excited about science."

Harvey added: "The visit has made me feel even more passionate about science and about my career ahead. I really enjoyed the experience of looking round the university and was very proud that my project was selected as the final winner."

During their day at the university they toured the campus with undergraduates and were given a lecture about hot and cold.
