A WORDSLEY fundraiser is hoping to sew up a large charity donation by creating patchwork blankets.

Michelle Picken is on the search for volunteers to help create knitted or crocheted squares which she then turns into blankets to sell for charity.

Through her Happy Tails Blanket Project, Michelle has so far created one large patchwork cover which raised £60 for Animal Rescue.

However, Michelle needs volunteers to help make squares due to the time it takes to create the blankets.

The 52-year-old said: “The more people involved in making the squares, the more blankets we can make and the more we can sell for the charity.

“I’ve raised money for Animal Rescue for a long time and have collected thousands of pounds from all sorts of things, including selling home-made jewellery and teddy bears.

“I was looking at more ways I could fundraise and it became apparent that lots of people buy these blankets and they sell for quite a lot of money.

“All the volunteers have to do is make granny squares and double knit the wool. They can be any size, knitted or crocheted, and in any colour or pattern. I can also provide the wool can if necessary.

“Once the volunteers have created them, they just take them to one of the two drop-off points.”

The drop-off points are located at Fair and Square, in Market Street, Stourbridge, and Fave Rave, in Camp Hill, Wordsley.

Michelle hopes that as well as making money for the charity, the project will raise awareness of the bad ways animals are treated.

She said: “I am an animal lover and the owner of several rescue animals myself.

“I think more people need to be aware of the situation of animal welfare not just in the UK but in the rest of Europe, which in some countries is shocking.”
