AS voters go to the polls today to make the momentous decision of whether we stay in or leave the European Union, children at a Cradley Heath school having been running their own referendum.

Pupils at Timbertree Academy have spent the week learning about Europe and the UK’s position and standing within the EU. They have staged debates, considered opposing views and today voted in their own mock election.

Head of school Caroline Phipps said: “It’s a once in a lifetime chance to learn about the fundamental value of democracy and for our children to experience the decision making process for themselves.”

After their own election count they will compare their results to the real election outcome tomorrow.

Assistant headteacher Wendy Jackson added: “We are very excited to be able to engage our children in a real-life democratic process.”
