TIRELESS Black Country bikers are recovering after completing their mammoth trip around the UK in 24 hours in aid of charity.

Stourbridge man Matt Davies came up with a mission to travel to each of Ronald McDonald House Charities’ 14 homes all in a single day.

Matt was joined on the motorcycle challenge with his wife Bev, and friends Mark and Steph Smith, as a way to raise money for the charity, which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families of seriously ill children in hospital.

The awesome foursome kicked off their journey at 6am last Tuesday (September 20) at Ronald McDonald House Birmingham, determined to reach their final destination of Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London – the charity’s first ever house to open – by 6am the following day.

Matt said: “We arrived at the last house at 5.58am, covering just under 1,000 miles.

“We met so many fantastic people along the way and the staff at each house were so welcoming and enthusiastic.

“We’re completely shattered from the journey but we’re happy that we’re on our way to reaching our £1,000 target for Ronald McDonald House Charities.”

This won’t be the last ‘bike-a-thon’ organised by Matt, who wants to plan similar expeditions in the future to raise money for the charity, hopefully attracting more motorcycle enthusiasts to sign up.

Libby Aston, house manager at the charity’s Birmingham house, said: “I must say a massive thanks to Matt for organising such a great fundraising challenge.

“The money he’s raised will help us to continue providing a safe haven for families, knowing they’re just moments away from their child.”

Matt was one of many bikers who started fundraising for the charity after a fellow rider lost his son following a serious illness in 2013.

While being treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital his parents were able to stay at the charity’s Birmingham house to be close him.

Since then, Matt and other bikers bring donations of household objects to the house every Christmas and Easter, while 150 big-hearted bikers rode from Halesowen to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with gifts for patients, and vital supplies for the house.
