CASH-STRAPPED Sandwell Council has confirmed its Remembrance Sunday commemorations will not be scaled back to to cost-cutting.

Sandwell Council leader Councillor Steve Eling outlined his commitment to supporting events to remember those who gave their lives in conflict.

He said: “There have been concerns about Remembrance events being scaled back due to budget cuts, but they’re not under threat in Sandwell.

“We have a parade and service in each of our six towns on Remembrance Sunday and this year’s events will be especially poignant, with 2016 being the centenary of the Battle of the Somme."

He added: “I hope local people will join with us to remember those lost and help make sure their sacrifices are never forgotten.”

Remembrance Sunday is November 13 and temporary road closures will be in place for the parades.

In Oldbury Deputy Mayor Councillor Susan Downing will be attending the service at the war memorial in Oldbury Civic Square.

The parade meets at 10.30am at Low Town car park, with the service starting at around 10.50am.

There will also be a short service in Oldbury Civic Square at 11am on Friday, November 11.

In Rowley Regis Mayor Councillor Julie Webb will be attending the service at Powke Lane Cemetery.

A parade will start at 10.25am from Highgate Street car park, Old Hill, and make its way to the cemetery ready for the service starting at 10.50am.

The parade then proceeds to Spring Meadow Social Club, Old Hill and Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands Colonel Heidi Doughty will be attending.

The Festival of Remembrance is at West Bromwich Town Hall, at 7.30pm on Sunday, November 13 and doors open at 6.30pm.
