INSPIRED by her dad who is living with Parkinson’s, a Stourbridge fundraiser is gearing up to cycle 19 miles for charity.

Heidi Thomas, who will turn 29 on the day of the cycle next Sunday (June 4), will take on the route around Stratford-upon-Avon at ‘Pedal for Parkinson’s’ an event which supports Parkinson’s UK.

The designer, who has already raised more than £500 for the charity, said: “My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's six years ago and it came as a total surprise.

“We spoke every day but being a typical dad he didn't want to worry me when he was waiting for a diagnosis.

“To be honest, we knew very little about Parkinson's and it really hit hard for what the future held. Initially it was very hard to deal with, even talking about it with people was upsetting but now it’s much easier to share our story and hopefully help raise awareness.

“Six years on we are taking everything step by step, trying different methods of medication and keeping positive with a ‘never give up’ attitude.

“My dad has a brilliant support network and in particular his Parkinson’s nurse Trudy Gaskin. She helps so many people and goes above and beyond to do so. I'd like to say a personal thank you to her for being so understanding and giving my dad hope.”

The one-day ‘Pedal for Parkinson’s’ event is designed for people of all ages and cycling ability, with cyclists being able to choose from a variety of different routes taking them through the rolling hills of the Warwickshire countryside.

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, said: “I’d like to thank Heidi for signing up to join us for what promises to be a fantastic day.

“Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, and the distances on offer at our Pedal events will suit everybody from families to experienced cyclists, so I would encourage everyone to saddle up and help us to raise awareness of Parkinson’s.

“The funds raised at the event will make a real difference to our work to improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s in the West Midlands.”
