Movie-inspired outfit rocks the River Rooms with 80s covers
ROAR are a five-piece band who pay homage to 80s AOR or soft rock, with more than a nod to the songs from the smash hit musical and movie Rock of Ages which followed the same format as regards musical genres.
The movie grossed over £70m worldwide at the box office and starred the likes of Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin playing parts in which their characters sang those classic radio-friendly songs.
Whilst ROAR impressively came on to a melody of three songs from the movie, their set list did not follow that of the show, far from it, although some of the numbers did crossover.
Most of the members have played in tribute bands to the likes of Queen, Heart and Bon Jovi at one point or another, with the lead singer Shell Naylor having sung with Roy Wood for over 20 years.
Artists covered included Huey Lewis and The News, Journey, Bon Jovi, Queen and Don Henley and it was clear the members love playing the rock music of the 80s which is still heard regularly on the radio, both here and in the USA.
All are tremendously talented and if there was one criticism it would be that having a female lead singer means with some of the songs it is necessary to have a male voice leading some of the songs, such as on Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).
If anyone was in doubt that the 80s revival includes power ballads and melodic rock as well as new romantic and pop music, ROAR dispelled that with a thoroughly enjoyable performance in front of a busy crowd.
