THE marketing manager for a Brierley Hill gaming centre has taken up the challenge to trek 100km across the world's hottest desert.

Phil Gibbs, aged 48, who works for Cashino Gaming, is hoping to raise £3,000 for The Responsible Gambling Trust by embarking on a five day hike across the Sahara later this month.

He will be one of 24 people, representing different sectors of the gambling industry that will travel across sand dunes, barren rocky plateaus, gravel plains, dry valleys and salt flats on March 22.

They aim to collectively raise £50,000 in aid of the charity, which encourages people to gamble responsibly through education and provides treatment services for those with gambling problems.

Mr Gibbs said: "As a company, we are a major supporter of the charity. We want our customers to have a fantastic time with us but we do our utmost to ensure they gamble responsibly.

“I must admit, the prospect of walking for days across the largest desert on the African continent was slightly daunting, especially when I found out how hot it’s going to be but it will be worth it if we hit our fundraising target.”

He continued: “I hope as many people as possible will help me to reach my goal. I’m going to try my very best, even if I do have to cosy up to a camel.”
