A DUDLEY man who punched his former girlfriend in the face while she was holding a baby has been jailed.

Howard Searle, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court the victim slumped to the ground after the attack as Steven Williams, aged 26, offered her no assistance and "callously" walked away.

He said Williams who had been drinking had been involved in a heated argument with the victim.

Mr Searle added at the time of the attack Williams had been the subject of a community order for harassing the same woman.

Judge John Warner told Williams the attack, which was caught on CCTV, was "very unpleasant" and it was an aggravating feature of the case it had been carried out in the presence of the child.

He jailed Williams for six months for the assault and ruled he should have to spend a further two months behind bars for breaching the community order.

Robert Perry for Williams, from Summer Road, who pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, said the offence was "borne out of a fraught and difficult situation."

He told the court that his client accepted he had acted in an entirely inappropriate manner and stressed that since the offence he had had no contact at all with his former partner.

After his arrest, said Mr Searle, Williams told police officers he had little recollection of the incident because of the alcohol he had downed previously.
