Free rowing sessions in Netherton
11:02am Thursday 29th May 2014 in Local
PEOPLE can try their hand at rowing for free in Netherton this weekend.
Sessions, at the Dudley Water Sports Centre on Sunday (June 1), will be run by Dudley Council in conjunction with British Rowing and Dudley’s Clinical Commissioning Group.
The event forms part of the council’s Let’s Get campaign, which encourages residents to take on more physical activity and eat healthier food.
From 10am to 2pm, adults and children aged 12 and over will have the chance to try rowing under the guidance of a fully qualified instructor, with all the necessary equipment provided.
Information and demonstrations on other water sports available at the centre, including diving, jet skiing and sailing will be available throughout.
Those who don’t want to delve into the waters can browse a number of stalls and try indoor rowing and free zumba classes from noon.
There will also be a guided walk, starting at 11am from the centre, to take people around the reservoir as well as the woodland and historic site of neighbouring Saltwells Nature Reserve.
Valerie Little, director of public health in Dudley, said: “We want to help everyone in Dudley borough to get more active.
“A lot of people walk or drive past the reservoir but they don’t realise the fantastic fun activities that are on offer there.”
She continued: “Thanks to our partnership with British Rowing we can offer free rowing activities for all our residents at the facility and I hope lots of people will try it out this summer.”
Specialist indoor rowing equipment and tuition will also be made available at selected secondary schools and all Dudley Council leisure centres.
Pre-bookable rowing introduction sessions and courses are also on offer at the reservoir.
