A FLAGSHIP project for Dudley’s waterways is on the crest of a wave after winning a half-a-million pound grant.

Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd collected the Biffa Flagship award at a ceremony on October 9 at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

The cash, which will be paid out over the next two years, will help pay for The Portal, a new visitor centre designed to be a 21st century gateway to the limestone mines and canal tunnels within Castle Hill.

Gillian French, Biffa Award programme manager, said: “The Flagship Scheme is an opportunity to award funding to projects that have something unique and exciting that no other project can offer.

“We received more than 40 good quality applications for this year’s Flagship Scheme, but we are delighted for the Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Limited on their success. Their inspirational Portal project will not only ensure the safeguarding this rich cultural history, but it will create a fantastic resource that will be enjoyed by the local community and visitors alike.”

The Dudley tunnels have international scientific significance and The Portal will provide an increased range of attractions to the site as well as an enhanced educational experience for visiting students and school pupils.
