AN elderly woman has been found dead after a fire at a flat in Netherton.

Officers from West Midlands Fire Service discovered the woman’s body at around 4.20pm yesterday (December 9) in the living area of a fourth floor flat in St John Street.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “There had been a fire in the kitchen, although this was out when we arrived. At this stage it’s not clear when the fire occurred. Our fire investigators will be working to establish this, as well as the cause.”

Area commander Simon Shilton added: “The fire was confined to the kitchen, and the lady was found in the lounge. It is too early to say how she died, and whether her death was linked to the fire. Our sympathies are with her family and friends.”

An investigation is continuing this morning and the cause remains unknown.

A west Midlands Police spokesperson added: "Police were called to a flat in St John’s Street, Netherton after the body of a woman, believed to be in her 40s, was found.

"Her death does not appear to be suspicious and a post mortem will be carried out in due course."
