A NETHERTON school has won £1,000 after pupils impressed judges at a Christmas choir competition at Merry Hill.

Youngsters from Netherbrook Primary School were named best performers at the Little Voices final, held on December 5.

Now in its 14th year, the competition encourages schools from across the region to sing their hearts out for the chance to win cash prizes.

The choir, led by inclusion leader Susan Hayes-Clarke and teaching assistant Jayne Barfoot, performed two song written especially for the event, entitled Wild Wild West and The Merry Hill Stomp.

Mrs Hayes-Clarke, who penned the tunes, said: "The competition provides a brilliant platform for the children to perform on.

"It's one thing singing at school but the act of getting on a coach and travelling to somewhere else to perform in front of family and friends is so exciting for the them. It's something that I'm sure they'll remember for the rest of their lives."

The prize money will be spent on musical instruments and a theatre trip for the talented choristers.
