ANGRY residents are calling for action to stop speeding cars and motorcyclists from tearing around the streets around Netherbrook Primary School.

People living on the Bowling Green estate want to see traffic calming measures installed to stop drivers racing around the one-way system that was created to stop parking problems outside the school in Chester Road.

Ward councillor Bryan Cotterill is backing their fight - as is Netherbrook headteacher Phil Rawlings who fears "somebody will be knocked down and seriously injured or worse" if measures to combat the problem are not implemented soon.

Cllr Cotterill, who plans to hand over a 100-plus name petition to highways chiefs tomorrow (Thursday), said: "Unfortunately the one-way system has become a race track and motorbikers have been seen doing wheelies along Bristol Road. We've got to find some form of traffic calming - such as speed bumps - but it also needs the police to come and feel collars."

Mr Rawlings, who has contacted both the police and council about the problem, added: "Cars drive at ridiculous speeds down the road - there are no traffic calming measures.

"If you look around most schools there are speed humps or 20mph signs - we have got nothing; apart from a one-way system and all that does is guarantee nothing's coming the other way so people can drive even faster.

"I'm genuinely and deeply concerned about the speed of cars and motorbikes.

"It's quite a dangerous situation and quite embarrassing when you show parents around, talking about health and safety and safeguarding children, and cars are driving up and down the road at what must be 60mph or well above the speed limit.

"It needs speed humps in Exeter Road and Bristol Road and better signage."
