SCUBA divers are planning to take the plunge and tackle underwater litter in Dudley.

Members of Dudley Dolphin, a branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club, regularly dive at Netherton Reservoir so are keen to keep it clean.

They will delve to the bottom and collect debris from up to 15 metres below surface on April 26.

While active members are underwater, friends and family will be clearing litter from the banks of the reservoir.

Club welfare officer Mandy Downing said it was important to keep the reservoir clean as it is a "little haven".

She continued: “We all use the water so we should all do our bit to maintain it and keep it as nice as we can for as long as possible.

“The bits of rubbish are mainly round the edges as the area is popular with the local community for fishing and walking and unfortunately there is an inevitable amount of litter that comes with human visitors.

“It’s mainly tins and bottles and cans but there is the odd shopping trolley that has found its way in there too. We’re hoping we’ll be able to recycle what we pull out as well and put it back into the system rather than it just being junked."

Mary Tetley, BSAC Chief Executive, added: “Our scuba divers care very passionately about the sea, rivers and waterways which are so important to the enjoyment of the sport. This includes the marine and wildlife which are reliant on them too.

“It’s great to hear members of Dudley Dolphin are doing their bit to look after and protect the reservoir that provides such a great training ground and recreational spot for them.

“It will be intriguing to hear about what they find.”
