SEDGLEY councillor Bill Etheridge has called another public meeting to rally troops in a bid to save The Seven Stars pub.

It has been a rollercoaster ride for punters campaigning against a retail giant's plans to turn the pub into a convenience store.

When Morrison's recently withdrew its application to sell alcohol at the premises after the Seven Stars is converted into an "M" store, it seemed there was light at the end of the tunnel.

But celebrations were short lived as Morrison’s have now submitted another licensing application, asking for permission to sell alcohol for 18 hours a day - from 6am till midnight.

Cllr Etheridge, who is also a West Midlands MEP, said “The potential noise and nuisance from people drinking on the streets at all hours will far outweigh any disturbance residents ever had from the pub.

“In the pub, far better control can be kept as to the condition of the drinkers."

He has urged people against the move to attend a public meeting at the pub on Gospel End Road at 7.30pm tomorrow (Thursday October 1).

Cllr Etheridge has also been contacting local off-licenses to gauge their reaction to the latest development.

He added “I genuinely fear for the livelihoods of some of the independent traders.

“Losing not only a valued and profitable pub, but also a number of smaller retailers cannot be good for the future of Sedgley.

“Anyone who feels the same way should contact my office for details of how to object, or better still, come along on Thursday and I’ll have all the details there.”
