DUDLEY’S police station is facing closure and although a top cop has said there will be “no impact on the service the public receive”, the West Midlands Police Federation believe the move would "take officers further from the communities they serve".

The station on New Street is one of 28 across the region that West Midlands Police want to close over the next two years in a bid to save £8.5million.

Deputy Chief Constable David Thompson said the buildings, which are no longer open to the public, were rarely used.

He added: “They are a throwback to a time officers were deployed from these buildings, that's not the way we work now."

However town’s politicians have vowed to fight the closure, with Dudley North MP Ian Austin saying he thought it would be "completely unacceptable" for the force to not to have officers based in Dudley and West Midlands MEP and Sedgley councillor Bill Etheridge, adding: "This is very grim news for the region, its people and for policing and law enforcement as a whole."

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson is expected to make a decision on the proposals next month, following a public engagement period led by the force.
