A MISS Black Country finalist from Lower Gornal has thrown herself into fundraising as part of her bid to win the top title.

Alex Robbins entered the beauty contest as she thought it would be a "bit of fun" and a good chance to meet some new friends.

The 24-year-old was "surprised" to be heading to the final, which will be held on May 22 at the Copthorne Hotel.

She said: "I wouldn't say I'm feeling confident but it is exciting. The other girls have been really nice and it's a great atmosphere.

"I expected it to be a bit like Miss Congeniality but it's nothing like that!"

Alex has been busy working her way through various challenges, including organising bag packs and quizzes to raise cash for the Beauty With a Purpose charity, which helps disadvantaged children.

The self-employed horse groom, who lives in Gideons Close, has also been wracking her brains for designs for the eco-friendly dress she must create.
