A WOMAN was confirmed dead at the scene of a house fire in Netherton this morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at around 7.30am today (May 19) in Spring Road.

Investigators using dogs remained at the scene throughout the day but so far no details have been released.

Residents described how one of the people in the building attempted to escape through an upstairs window.

A witness said: "She was trying to get out, you can see a hand print on the window, then it looked like a curtain pole fell on her."

The semi-detatched house has been completely destroyed by the fire which left the outside walls blackened by smoke.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When the first crew arrived the house was well alight.

“Sadly a woman was found inside the property. There was nothing that could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

“A second woman, in her 30s, was treated for smoke inhalation and shock. She was taken to Russells Hall Hospital.

“A third woman, believed to be a neighbour, was uninjured.”
