RAIDERS of the lost archaeological finds at the site of the new Tower Street car park in Dudley have confirmed building work will go ahead as planned.

Investigations were made to make sure nothing of note was being built on by the new 90-space car park, and while some interestings items were found, nothing will halt its pre-Christmas opening.

Archaeologist Geoff Morley from Moles Archaeology recently completed a site investigation and unearthed some walls and floors of the former cellars for nearby and demolished buildings dated from the Georgian period.

Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, Dudley's cabinet member for regeneration, said the excavation provided information on the history of the site

“Carrying out archaeological investigations always creates a lot of interest, not least because we can uncover fascinating secrets that have remained underground for hundreds of years," he said.

“The excavations also gave us the opportunity to understand and record the archaeology of the site. However nothing of significance has been identified which means we can crack on with completing the car park in time for the pre-Christmas shopping rush.”

The new Tower Street car park is the latest in a series of new spaces being created in the town.

The council recently opened 21 new short stay spaces in Dudley, including a 12-space car park in New Mill Street and nine new spaces on Stone Street.

The work forms part of multi-million pound investment and regeneration plans for Dudley town centre.
