A DRIVER ploughed head-on into another vehicle at the end of a high speed pursuit and then told police officers it was their fault for chasing him.

Daanyal Alias hit speeds of 90mph in a 30mph zone during the chase, which began in Netherton when patrolling police officers saw him tailgating the car in front.

Wolverhampton Crown Court was told the 20-year-old then drove the wrong way down a one-way street as he accelerated away at speed.

During the chase he hit a wall as he took a sharp bend at speed before driving through a give-way sign and traffic lights on red.

Fiona Cortese, prosecuting, said Alias drove fast over speed bumps before his car left the road when he went over a hump-backed canal bridge at a time when he could not see if any vehicles were coming in the other direction.

A short time later he crashed the Vauxhall Vectra he had bought just days earlier into a Vauxhall Astra.

Miss Cortese said the man behind the wheel off the other car suffered bruising when his air bag inflated while also banging his knee and the car was a write-off.

Alias, of Lupin Road, Dudley, got out of his car and was quickly detained by the police officers, who he blamed for what had happened because they made the decision to chase after him.

Marcus Harry, defending, said Alias accepted there was no excuse for his behaviour having recently passed his driving test.

"He made a very foolish and dangerous decision to drive - something he bitterly regrets."

Mr Harry said Alias was now trying to turn his life around adding: "He knows the accident he caused could have been much more serious.

"But there is a light at the end of the tunnel with his maturing process."

Alias admitted driving dangerously and without insurance.

He also admitted the offences breached a 16 month jail term, which had been suspended for 18 months for an offence of wounding.

As Judge Marcus Tregilgas-Davey banned Alias from driving for 21 months and sentenced him to 18 months behind bars, he said: "It was a matter of sheer good fortune you did not kill anyone."
