Taking good care of elderly people

ELDERLY residents at a Netherton sheltered housing scheme joined forces with Age Concern to mark World Elder Abuse Week.

As part of the event, residents at Netherton Lodge in Simms Lane, enjoyed strawberries and cream tea, together with garden games, craft sessions and indian head massages.

They were also joined with youngsters from near-by Hillcrest School and Community College, who helped serve the refreshments.

Councillor Lesley Faulkner, cabinet member for adult and community services said the event was held to highlight that fun afternoons were not always enjoyed by all older people.

She said: “We feel the event was hugely important in raising awareness of the disturbing issue of elder abuse.

“We all had super fun and the residents and young people really enjoyed themselves. This is just one example of all ages socialising together, respecting one another and ensuring that our older people live in dignity , still enjoying full lives.”

Anyone who is worried about an elderly person who is being abused, should contact the Dudley Council safeguarding team on 01384 818543.
