DUDLEY town centre is set to be transformed with a £270 million regeneration plan, in a bid to get people to invest in the area.
The new plans will see money being pumped in to many of the town’s buildings and streets with a complete revamp of the historic market place on the cards.
The project is being run by developers New Heritage Regeneration Ltd, an independent company set up by Dudley Council, which aims to bring about significant investment for the borough’s four principal town centres.
Under the scheme, the plan will also see houses and attractive offices built with hundreds of new jobs being created.
The shabby shop fronts and flats above will be spruced up in a bid to attract new businesses to the town, and trees will also be planted to make the area more attractive for investors and shoppers.
The first town property to be transformed is the old Crown pub in Wolverhampton Street, which will be the base of the developers. Work on the pub is expected to start in September.
Deputy Council Leader, Councillor Les Jones, cabinet member for regeneration, spoke about the importance of the plans for Dudley’s future.
He said: “Dudley is in competition with every other local authority, who all want to do the same thing.
“We needed to make our plans exciting and appealing so that people will want to invest in the town.”
