TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular borough stalwart, who has died suddenly of a suspected heart attack.
Mac Griffiths was a retired Black Country detective superintendent, working with the West Midlands force for over 30 years, until his retirement in 1995, where he was mainly stationed at Brierley Hill.
He was also the current chairman of Dudley Borough Business Crime Partnership and the serving Mayor of Bridgnorth.
Mr Griffiths, aged 62, was attending a meeting of the Crime Partnership, on November 30, when he collapsed prior to the meeting.
Despite the best efforts of the paramedics and members of the committee, Mr Griffiths was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Paying tribute to Mac, George Whitehouse, Business Development and Partnerships Manager, said: “Mac was a very dedicated chairman who was totally committed to supporting businesses within the Borough of Dudley fight crime and anti-social behaviour on their premises and surrounding area.
“Mac freely gave his time when ever needed and chaired the Partnership through very demanding times due to the economic climate. His jovial manor will be missed by his Board colleagues and management team.”
His funeral will take place on Thursday, when former colleagues and friends from West Midlands Police will be providing a guard of honour.
Paying tribute to his friend, Dudley North Chief Superintendent, Keith Baldwin, said: "I knew Mac personally and professionally. I worked with him throughout his time at Dudley. His humour and commitment were infectious and he had the ability to engender the same level of commitment from all who worked with him. He was great fun to be around.
"He took the same level of dedication into his working life after his retirement from the police and right up to his tragic and untimely death. He was still an influential figure in the business environment of Dudley and will be sadly missed."
Mac’s funeral will take place at 11.45am on Thursday (December 10) at St Mary’s Church, East Castle Street, Bridgnorth.
