Mosque plan: ‘waiting over’

The Hall Street site where Dudley Muslim Association has announced it is to press ahead with its application to build a new mosque. The Hall Street site where Dudley Muslim Association has announced it is to press ahead with its application to build a new mosque.

DUDLEY'S Muslim leaders claim they "have waited long enough" as they announce plans to apply for full planning permission for a controversial new mosque and community centre.

Dr Khurshid Ahmed, chairman of the Dudley Muslim Association (DMA), said the group would be pressing ahead for full permission for the Hall Street site, after Dudley Council bosses left them no alternative.

Dudley Council announced in May it had been working closely with the DMA for the past year to find a site for the mosque other than Hall Street, which was still earmarked as prime employment land in the town’s unitary development plan.

It was claimed then that plans would focus on a redevelopment of the current outdated Castle Hill mosque, although this was soon ruled out.

Council officers have since suggested the empty Gala Bingo building opposite the mosque, but Dr Ahmed said the DMA did not support the idea and had "decided they preferred Hall Street".

Dr Ahmed said because the council had failed to come up with "an alternative viable site", it had left them no choice but to go with their original plans, which received outline planning permission on appeal from the High Court.

Dr Ahmed said: "We have tried to avoid building in Hall Street, but the council promised to find us an alternative and they have not been able to do that and we have waited long enough.

"We are disappointed, but we only have until July to start something on the site and with all the formalities that we have to go through, we will run out of time if we don't start soon."

The chairman said amicable discussions were still ongoing with the council, which was still searching for an alternative site and the DMA would consider any further suggestions.

However councillor Anne Millward, leader of the council, said she "disappointed" to hear DMA's plans, as the Gala Bingo site would have provided a suitable location.

Cllr Millward said: "Talks seemed to be very amicable so I was rather disappointed to hear this news.

"Everyone knows we lost the High Court appeal, but since then, we have been working very hard with the DMA to find somewhere else.

"A redevelopment of Castle Hill was always something we wanted to pursue with them, and as far as we were concerned, they were happy with this.

"And we did suggest Gala Bingo as that is empty, and wouldn't actually cost them that much to purchase.

"But everyone has the right to put in planning permission, they own the land, but I support the original planning committee's decision – that is prime employment land."

Dr Ahmed confirmed the DMA is currently tendering for architects to redesign the Hall Street project, as they aim for something "to blend in with the area".

He said: "We don't want a huge minaret, the last design was taken all out of proportion.

“It was not the actual design and was used by some political parties as scaremongering tactics. I would be concerned if there was a minaret bigger than Top Church.

"We are keeping open the doors and the dialogue with the council, but our intention is to proceed with Hall Street unless the council can find us another site."

Here we go again. There will be nothing left of Dudley if this keeps going as the EDL & UAF will turn up.

I bet it will be just as big and to be honest I don't want a massive mosque overlooking dudley.

Have a proper vote from the people of Dudley and you will get a view and I am sure it will be more than the last time.

I just hope the council don't back down....

At the end of the day, the council sold this land to the DMA years ago, so technically the DMA own the land and can build on it. However, they must build in accordance with planning regulations and make sure the size and scale of any development is suitable. I would rather there wasnt a mosque built there, but if they own the land and plan to fund this themselves then there is nothing anyone can do. The positives for me are that at least the old mosque on Castle Hill will eventually go, as Castle Hill is the main road into Dudley and cannot handle lots of traffic/parking which does happen on busy festival times. Also, maybe this development will kick start the regeneration of the Hall Street area that has been empty and neglected for years. The key is that the mosque is not overbearing and build to planning regulations. To the EDL and UAF, stay away from Dudley, we as the residents have suffered from your continued protests, no one wants you here!

Well that was quite to be expected, did anyone else seriously expect a different result.

@Iqster, you speak for no one but yourself. Please don't tell me, where I am and aren't welcome

I'm not surprised as DMA have shown a total disregard for building/maintaining good community relations throughout the whole of this process.

They are determined to force plans through irrespective of the damage this will cause. They have also consistently refused to dissuade members of the muslim community from taking to the streets in ill-judged and intimidatory 'responses' that have helped fue the disorder at EDL/UAF visits to the town (themselves caused by the contentious siting of the proposed mosque).
The crazy thing is that Dr Khurshid Ahmed is actually a supposed expert on race relations and community cohesion!!

What a nasty, fundamentalist dictator!!

It is time for Islam to be banned.

Worldwide, it is clear that Islam does NOT respect freedom of religions or freedom of the press.

Islam is pushing hard to become the State religion in this country as well as elsewhere in Europe.

They even want to impose Sharia law.

Why do we permit a minority "faith" roll all over the local population?

In the UK we do not have a state religion or state church.

The UK government has always tried to avoid what happened in 18th century.

Cromwell, the Covenanters and the Gunpowder Plot demonstrated that religion and violence can and do mix.

Modern day events, including the current problems in Dudley demonstrate the same.

The imposition of Shariah law would turn Islam into an Established Religion.

We already know about the risks posed to women and children by Islam. The honour killings related to the hijab are just one example.

What is the matter with Dudley Council?

The fear of the local population who do not want this mosque is well-grounded and only the council seems unaware of the global trends.

Islam totally rejects freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Eventually, as the numbers of Moslems and mosques increase and in order to protect the rights of Moslems non - Moslems will be deprived of freedom of religion and both Moslems AND non-Moslems will be denied freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

The Mohammed cartoon controversy and the persecution of Salman Rushdie show us all quite clearly how this will happen.

To accept Islam is to reject freedom of speech and religion.

"The crazy thing is that Dr Khurshid Ahmed is actually a supposed expert on race relations and community cohesion!"

This will no way help relations or integration it will prove the opposite. I would love for Mr Ahmed to outline how this will help integration going forward.

He is being bloody minded and no doubt wants the biggest Mosque to get the Kudos!

Please feel free to visit Alum Rock Road to see how intergration works!!

From a previous letter:

SO Khurshid Ahmed says he would like to win the hearts and minds of Dudley residents (Viewpoint, March 15).

How peculiar when a week or two ago he was telling residents to leave Dudley if they weren't happy with his plans.

Khurshid Ahmed seems determined to build his Islamic Victory mosque in the most prominent place in Dudley he can find.

I do wish the Mr Ahmed would explain why the Bingo Hall is unsuitable.

Mr Ahmed takes his right to freedom of religion too far. To him it seems to confer unlimited authority to build the mosque wherever he likes, no questions asked.

He clearly does not understand that many local people are fearful of mosques ( of which there are hundreds in the West Midlands and a good few already in Dudley itself) because these places are known as locations where the preaching and teaching of Shariah law takes place. Shariah law is incompatible with UK freedoms.

It has already been stated ( sorry, more "bigotry"!!) by a member of the Synod ( and quite some time ago) that the building of more and more mosques in the Uk will inevitably lead to Shariah law in this country.

What is wrong with the minds of Dudley councillors? Can't they see this?

Why on earth do they not act in their own interests and in the interests of the majority of Dudley citizens? Dudley Council seem to operate on the hopeless principle that "well, if we kiss their feet maybe they ( the Moslems)won't hurt us!".

Clearly after all the problems we have had with Islamic terrorism in recent years together with the facts that most of our mosques are unmonitored and that "sleeper cells " HAVE been at work around the country one would have thought Dudley Council would have noticed that this approach to Moslems is not effective.

Are our UK councillors and politicians scared of being called Islamophobes or Nazis? I don't think we have quite got round to torturing imams just yet.....

Mr Ahmed's disingenuous words about the height of the steeple etc. give us quite a good example of taqqiya and are words used to falsely pacify, confuse and disorient the general reading public, ordinary Dudley citizens and most seriously of all Dudley Council all of whom are only just a bunch of infidels anyway!
His words and actions clearly demonstrate how Western laws about tolerance are used by "peaceful" ( ?)Moslems to justify the wave of anti-infidel intolerance we have seen in Dudley and around the country for a very long time now.

I will be accused of "demonizing" Moslems but of course they do a good job of demonizing themselves without any help from infidels.

What is the next step in Dudley? Street prayer protests as in europe and the USA?
