Heroes welcome for soldiers
4:18pm Monday 2nd July 2012 in Local
DUDLEY residents flocked into the town to cheer the Royal Mercian Lancastrian Yeomanry as part of Armed Forces Day.
Armed with banners and flags, residents welcomed more than 100 soldiers to the town, as they marched through the centre, before being given the freedom scroll by the Mayor of Dudley.
Dudley Council also ran activities during the day at Himley Hall in honour of the work of the men and women of the armed forces.
Veterans were presented with special HM Armed Forces Veterans Badges, while the historic park grounds hosted a display of military vehicles and music from the D-Day Darlings.
Councillor Melvyn Mottram, Mayor of Dudley, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people coming along to our Armed Forces Day celebrations. We had lots more going on than ever before and I would like to thank everyone involved in making the day such a huge success.
“We have a long and happy tradition of working closely with the armed forces and this is why these celebrations are so important to remind everyone of the vitally important work they do.”
