Gornal Wood Crem chapel to close for nine days

GORNAL Wood Crematorium chapel will be closed to mourners for nine days next month for a £1 million overhaul, with funerals forced to relocate elsewhere.

The closure will take place from Tuesday August 28 to Friday September 7, as internal structural alterations are carried out alongside redecoration of the chapel.

The crematorium grounds will remain open for the duration, but funerals will be relocated to Stourbridge Crematorium.

John Millar, director of the urban environment, said: “Dudley Council is investing £1million to carry out essential works to replace the cremation facilities at Gornal Wood and install mercury abatement equipment to meet new legal requirements.

“Whilst these major works are ongoing the council has also taken the opportunity to carry out re-decoration work in the chapel.

“Work will start over the bank holiday weekend in order to minimise the disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience it may cause during this short period.”
