Youth theatre summer project aims to keep arty youngsters entertained
8:00am Friday 10th August 2012 in Local
JIGSAW Youth Theatre’s young members are preparing to wow audiences with a new musical created over the course of a week.
The Dudley based youth theatre has been running creative workshops and projects to keep youngsters active during the holidays and for the past week a group of young people have been working with a choreographer, a musician and theatre director to create their own original show from scratch.
Their hard work will result in a public performance taking place at Jigsaw’s Dudley venue - Holloway Hall - on Saturday August 11 at 7pm.
The ‘Unwritten’ project, as it’s been titled, forms part of Jigsaw’s summer programme, which offers performing arts activities to young people at venues across the borough - including drop-in workshops in Halesowen, Coseley, and Stourbridge.
Many regular term-time classes continue to run over the holidays and are free of charge until the new term starts in September.
Activities will conclude with a free week-long Arts Award project at Lye’s Valley Road Youth Centre from Tuesday August 28, which will allow youngsters to gain a nationally recognised qualification accredited by Arts Council England and Trinity College London.
The project encourages young people to develop their knowledge and interest in the arts by taking part in dance and drama activities.
The course also includes chance to visit a London theatre and review an award-winning show.
Andy Coulter, project manager said: “Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy and experience the arts, so we are trying hard to make our workshops as accessible as possible.
“We hope that by visiting different venues and keeping our workshops affordable more people will be encouraged to take part.”
