Cycle charity’s refit complete

THERE were celebrations at a wheely popular Dudley cycle charity this week, which has officially reopened following a major refit of the workshop.

Volunteers at City Can Cycle, based at the Sycamore Centre in Sycamore Green, regularly receive disused, abandoned, broken and stolen bikes and make them roadworthy again.

But the charity, which was set up in 2007 by John Lane and is run in conjunction with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme and Community Service Volunteers, has become so popular that more room was needed in the workshop and the charity temporarily closed for three weeks as work was carried out.

Following an overhaul of the work space, which has included a new cycle storage rack and a visitor viewing area, the facility was re-opened by the mayor of Dudley, councillor Melvyn Mottram on Monday.

Volunteers are now gearing up for a busy few weeks in the lead-up to Christmas, as the charity also works alongside Barnardo’s in giving refurbished bikes out to local families facing a financial struggle during the festive period.
