A YOUNG Brockmoor dad-of-two is getting set to hold his first fundraiser this weekend in aid of Leukaemia CARE, in memory of his mum.
Gareth McCarthy is hosting a Race Night on Saturday (October 13) at Dudley Sports and Social Club in Hillcrest Avenue, Brierley Hill in a bid to raise cash in honour of his mum, Andrea, who lost her fight with the disease ten years-ago.
The former Castle High school pupil was just 15 years-old when Andrea passed away and after getting married to wife Stacey and raising sons, Dylan, aged nine and George aged three, Gareth decided this year would be the perfect year to do something in her memory.
Gareth, who is a bus driver for National Express, is also in training for the London Marathon next year in a bid to boost the charity coffers even further.
The 25 year-old, from Station Road, said: “I have always wanted to do the marathon and as it is ten years since mum passed away, I decided to sign up.
“I have set myself a final target of £2,500 but I didn’t want to rely just on sponsorship, I wanted to come up with other ways to raise the money, so the race night is my first fundraiser.”
Tickets for the event, which kicks off at 7pm, are priced £1 and bets for the horse racing cost 50p each.
A raffle will also be held with prizes donated by borough business, including meals, shopping vouchers, cinema tickets and wine.
Gareth added: “My mum was really bubbly, friendly and would do anything for anyone. She was a great mum and it was hard to lose her so young, but I hope I can give something back in her memory through this.”
