SUFFERERS of neurological disorder Ataxia are set to get some extra support as Dudley fundraisers host a summer fair next weekend.

The Dudley Ataxia group, which was set up just over a year ago, raises money and awareness for the relatively unknown set of disorders which affect people in many ways, including balance and coordination, while also causing speech problems.

Although some aspects can be treated, there is no cure and many symptoms can be life changing and devastating for sufferers and their loved ones.

To help fund future research, as well as raise awareness for both the condition and the Ataxia UK charity, the Dudley group are holding their summer fair on Saturday, June 17, at Oakfield Community Centre, in Hawbush, Brierley Hill.

There will be arts and crafts stalls, jewellery making, local handmade goods, alongside cake decorating and face painting for youngsters, while there will be plenty of tea and cake to go around.

Louan Rutherford, whose daughter Megan Bradford, a pupil at Kingswinford’s Summerhill School, suffers from the disorder, said: “Ataxia UK is a wonderfully supportive charity but it is small and funding is limited.

“Raising money for future research is so important alongside getting the word Ataxia out there so people understand what it's all about.

“The public’s support would be very welcome and we look forward to seeing everyone there.”

Entry into the fair, which starts at the Brettell Lane venue from 3pm, costs £1 per person.
