AN OVEN which was alight in Brierley Hill on Tuesday evening had to be extinguished by West Midlands Fire Service crews.

Firefighters responded to a 999 call at 11.54pm reporting a fire in an oven on the 8th floor of a high rise block of flats in St John’s Court.

Crews from Brierley Hill, Stourbridge and Haden Cross stations, consisting of 15 firefighters and three engines, attended the blaze which was believed to be caused by the occupier turning on the grill inadvertently.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to remove burnt food from the oven, after water was being used to dampen down the area.

The occupier, a woman in her early 20s, suffered from smoke inhalation and required attention by the ambulance service.

She did not require hospital treatment, but paramedics did carry out precautionary checks at the scene.

Fire crews made the scene safe by disconnecting the cooker and carrying out a home safety check.

The woman was given home safety advice by the crews who also advised her to get the cooker checked by a qualified technician before using it again.

After the incident, Brierley Hill fire tweeted: “Please take extra care when cooking.”
