FIREFIGHTERS from Brierley Hill were called to another small fire at a derelict factory in Saltwells Lane.

West Midlands Fire Service crews were alerted to and attended the fire at the former Kuehne and Nagel UK factory units on the junction with Saltwells Road at 5.26pm on Sunday, June 14.

The fire service was called to the scene by West Midlands Police after smoke was seen bellowing from building on the border of Quarry Bank and Netherton.

Brierley Hill Fire Station sent eight firefighters to the incident, including five on an engine and three on a brigade response vehicle, while Haden Cross Fire Station sent one fire engine crew of five officers.

Neil Spencer, a fire service spokesman, said: “The first message we received said intruders were on site and set fire to a property on the junction of Saltwells Lane and Saltwells Road.

“The incident involved a small fire measuring 40 by 150 metres, with minimum smoke logging, and crews used one hose reel attached to the fire engine to extinguish the flames.

“Fire crew and police searched the area for anyone who may still be on the site, but the building was thoroughly checked and all persons were accounted for.

“Police are now requesting the boarding up of the building after a number of recent incidents at the address.”

In January 2013 Dudley Council planners gave their approval for 70 new homes to be built on the site.
