BOSSES at intu Merry Hill said they were saddened to hear BHS is to be wound down - likely spelling the end for one of the shopping centre’s flagship stores.

It is too early to say, however, what will become of the large two-storey corner store, currently occupied by BHS, which provides a walkway through from the mall to the multi-storey car park.

But mall bosses say they will work hard to ensure the centre boasts the right mix of stores in the right locations.

Lizbeth Taylor, general manager at intu Merry Hill, said: “We're sorry to hear that a buyer has not been found for the BHS business and our thoughts are with the staff affected.

“We will work alongside the administrators whilst they implement next steps but have no further information on the status of individual units at this time.

“Enhancing shoppers’ experience by having the right mix of retailers, in the right locations is paramount for us and we look forward to announcing more developments in the future.

“The launch of the new flagship Topshop/Topman in April shows that intu Merry Hill this is a shopping centre where retailers can thrive.”

It is not known how many workers at BHS Merry Hill are affected but around 8,000 staff working for the long-running chain store are expected to lose their jobs nationally and up to 3,000 staff in the concessions outlets within BHS may be at risk.
