DEDICATED Stourbridge blood donors who have potentially saved about 1,200 lives between them have been recognised for their loyalty and commitment.

Lorraine James and Martin Baker, of Brierley Hill, John Mould, of Amblecote, and Jackie Banks, of Sedgley, were honoured for their lifesaving efforts by NHS Blood and Transplant at a ceremony for reaching a century of offerings.

Retiree John, 65, has been donating blood for about 47 years as he wished to give something back after receiving blood at the age of 13.

He said: “Giving blood takes so little time but helps so many. Blood donors helped me as a teenager.”

Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people, but out of the three per cent of the population who give blood just one per cent reach 100 donations.

Karen Healy, senior marketing coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “These loyal donors are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks. These donors are an inspiration to us all.”

People can give blood as long as they are fit and healthy, weigh over seven stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if given blood before). Those aged over 70 need to have given blood in the last two years.
