DUDLEY Kingswinford Rugby club players will be stepping out in style thanks to a £250 grant from a Merry Hill supermarket.
Sainsbury’s presented the cash to the players as part of its community grant scheme, after the club wrote to the store asking to hold a charity bag pack to raise funds for a new kit.
After reading their letter, Yvonne Artiss, the store’s PR mbassador, suggested they apply to the community grant scheme, which gives handouts to charitable groups in the area and which is funded through bag sales.
Manager Natalie Walker said: “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it.
“When we heard about the club needing kit we were really pleased to be able to help.”
Meanwhile the club is busy trying to raise £6,000 to enable players to take part in an under 16s tournament in Belgium.
The team is one of only two from Britain invited to take part and already members have raised around £2,000 through events, sponsorship and bag packs.
Anyone wishing to sponsor the team can contact head coach Roland Green on 07533 799388.
