Reunion call for former Brierley Hill swimmers

BRIERLEY Hill Swimming Club is holding a reunion for former club members.

The club, which meets at Dudley Leisure Centre, has been going for 50 years and is inviting past and present members to a get together to mark the occasion which will be held at Wombourne Civic Centre on June 8 at 7.30pm.

Despite the demolition of the club’s original home - Brierley Hill Swimming Baths - back in 2006 and the later loss of Coseley Baths in 2009, the club is still going strong and boasts more than 100 members.

A lack of available pool time in the borough meant the group had to pull the plug on competitive swimming, but twice weekly sessions continue to be held at Dudley Leisure Centre to teach youngsters aged four and over how to swim.

Group treasurer Phil Steven said the club has taught more than 10,000 youngsters to swim over the last 50 years - and a number of former swimmers have gone on to compete in the sport.

Success stories include veteran swimmer Kath Tunnicliffe who trained with the club as a child and who still swims competitively; and former club member Chris Jones who swam for Scotland and is now a top level coach.

Anyone interested in attending the reunion can contact Phil Steven on 07967 985650.
