Brierley Hill motorcyclist jailed after fatal crash

A BRIERLEY Hill motorcyclist has been jailed for ten months today (Thursday July 5) after he crashed into and killed a teenager in Birmingham.

Duncan Lenard, aged 40, of Sandringham Way, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and causing the death of 16-year-old Rajinder Mahal by careless driving.

The teenager, from Smethwick, (pictured) died after being hit by Lenard’s high-powered motorcycle on Hagley Road.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the smash outside Lordswood Boys' School at 10pm on August 1 2011 but medics were unable to save him.

The court heard Lenard had been driving at 81mph, 200 metres before the collision, in a 30mph speed limit.

Inspector Mark Watkins, from West Midlands Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Lenard clearly had no regard for the safety of other road users or pedestrians as he rode his motorbike at nearly three times the speed limit, shortly before the collision.”

As well as the prison sentence, Lenard was also banned from driving for 30 months - after which he will have to take an extended test to regain his licence.

Insp Watkins said: “This sentence reflects the severity of the offence and the incident shows the tragic consequences of such dangerous speed.

"Our thoughts are with Rajinder's family."
