CROOKS in Dudley will be the talk of the town after the introduction of a radio net for cops and retailers.

More than 30 businesses have joined forces with the borough’s Business Crime Partnership (DBBCP) to crack down on thefts in the town centre.

By signing up, retailers can gain access to a radio system linking shops in the town with the borough’s CCTV control room and town centre police teams.

The link improves how quickly crime can be reported and information about suspicious activity can be shared.

The partnership also produces regular bulletins giving details, and photographs of prolific offenders and their associates, including those banned from neighbouring stores.

Councillor Judy Foster, Dudley cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It’s important we do everything we can to revitalise our town centres, making them appealing and safe for both visitors and workers.

Sergeant Corrina Griffiths, from Dudley police, said: “The DBBCP gives police the power along with shops and stores within the partnership to ban those individuals who are caught shoplifting and to take positive action to support the reduction of crime within the town centre.

The radio link and bulletins are available to retailers who sign up to the partnership which is active in all town centres across the borough including Merry Hill.
