THE organiser of a Dudley demonstration has promised to return protestors to the town as council bosses consider accepting an out of court settlement to end a legal battle over land earmarked for a new mosque.

Kevin Smith, the man behind the All Football Fans/Firms March Against Islamisation (AFFFMAI) event which brought 200 football fans to Dudley on Saturday (June 13), said he was “fuming” after hearing Dudley Council is considering accepting a £325,000 offer from Dudley Muslim Association for the Hall Street site.

Councillor Pete Lowe, leader of Dudley Council, said the offer would be carefully considered - as it could put an end to a long-running and costly court battle for ownership of the site - and it is due to be discussed at a cabinet meeting at The Council House, Dudley, on Thursday June 25.

Cllr Lowe, who joined members of Unite Against Fascism at a counter protest ahead of the AFFFMAI event on Saturday, said the matter would be scrutinised fully before a decision is taken and he said: “It’s about bringing a resolution to an issue that’s affected the borough of Dudley for a long time.”

However, Dudley’s Conservative Group leader – councillor Patrick Harley – has warned accepting the offer could spark further protests "not stifle them" if people “feel deals are being done in back rooms”.

And in fact AFFFMAI’s Kevin Smith confirmed this morning (Wednesday) that football fans would return to Dudley to further highlight their opposition to DMA’s plan to build a new state-of-the-art mosque and community centre on the derelict site.

He told the News: "I’ve put the call out already. If they’re not listening we’re going to keep coming back time and time again. It's going to cost them a fortune.

"We’ve been totally ignored and now they’re offering deals. I’m fuming.”

He stressed the group was not a band of racists, just people concerned about the impact of Islam on Britain, and he said: “It’s not about politics or race – it’s a religious thing.”

Earlier this week, he branded those who didn’t turn out to Saturday’s march “plastic patriots” and he said the days of mass demonstrations was over.

But he stressed it wasn’t the end for AFFFMAI and he has now confirmed plans are in the pipeline to hold a static protest on the steps of Dudley Council House on Saturday September 5 from 1pm.

A public debrief on the June 13 AFFFMAI/UAF protest day will be held at Dudley Council House, Priory Road, at 6pm on Tuesday June 23.
