DUDLEY MP Ian Austin has welcomed news of a Government u-turn on plans to privatise the Land Registry.
Labour MP Mr Austin joined other Parliamentarians to campaign against Government plans to put the Land Registry up for sale.
He said privatisation would clear the way for trusts and shell companies registered in tax havens to buy properties and land in the UK, and put profits from privatisation ahead of long-term income from the agency.
The plans now look set to be shelved, however, but the Dudley North MP wants the Government to make an official announcement that proposals have been dropped.
He said: "This is a real result for campaigners and everyone that uses the Land Registry's services. It's a great example of what we can do when we work together.
"The Land Registry made a profit of over £100m in 2015, so this is the right decision for Britain's long-term interests.
"Now I want the Government to admit it made a mistake and give Land Registry staff assurances that their jobs are secure."
