MURDER accused Kobe Murray's dad drove him to a police station after hearing about the tragic death of Ryan Passey at Chicago's in Stourbridge, a court was told.

Murray, aged 19, of The Broadway, Dudley, had gone to the club on August 5 with friends when trouble flared.

Ryan Passey was also there with two friends and there was a minor altercation between the two groups - prosecutor Phil Bradley QC told Birmingham Crown Court.

A doorman issued a warning to the lads in the busy Ryemarket club and minutes later Ryan Passey fell to the floor.

He suffered a single stab wound to his chest, which went into his heart.

Despite the best efforts of those at the scene he was pronounced dead at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital at 2.07am on August 6.

The jury was shown a series of CCTV images from the evening showing the two groups of lads, plus bodycam footage on which Ryan was heard saying "there's only two of us and about six of them".

The court was told a witness, Brad Maslen-Jones, saw Kobe Murray with a five to six inch object in the club - believed to be a knife - and the prosecution said Murray was preparing himself for trouble.

Mr Bradley said: "Sure enough when trouble flared up again about five minutes later Kobe Murray plunged the knife into Ryan Passey's chest. That single violent movement brought Mr Passey to the floor."

After the incident Murray fled the club with friends - hiding his face from CCTV.

Shortly afterwards Murray told friends Brad Hackett and Ethan Jones that he had stabbed someone and he produced the knife in the car.

Mr Bradley said Brad Hackett noticed watery blood on the blade.

Ethan Jones then drove to Cochrane Road in Dudley where Murray got out of the car and disposed of the knife.

Meanwhile - some time later Murray telephoned his mother, Elizabeth Murray, and told her he'd done something stupid... and that he'd messed up.

Mrs Murray contacted the police - and having established his whereabouts, his father Errol Murray went to collect him from Tipton and drove him to West Bromwich Police Station.

In the car Murray told his father the victim had punched him and he then got the knife and stabbed out. He claimed the weapon was not his and said he later discarded it and burnt his clothes.

But in a police interview under caution the following day he read out a prepared statement denying he murdered Ryan Passey.

It said: "If it was a knife it was self defence - I do not recall the exact circumstances of the night due to being attacked and being intoxicated."

The prosecution say the statement was totally at odds with Murray's confession to his friend Brad Hackett and his father.

He told the court that Errol Murray noticed his son's face was free from injury - and Murray replied "I know - I could've just knocked him out."

Mr Bradley added: "When he drove that knife into Ryan Passey - Kobe Murray did so deliberately with the intention to cause Mr Passey serious harm."

He said there was no suggestion Mr Passey and his friends, who had played football together earlier that day, had a knife or other weapon - and he confirmed Mr Passey was not known to Murray.

The trial, expected to last two weeks, is continuing.
