PUPILS helped to break their Kingswinford school’s fundraising record as hundreds of youngsters came together to support Cancer Research UK.

More than 300 students at Summerhill School joined forces with teachers and governors as they took on cancer by walking, jogging or running 5km to aid the charity’s life-saving work.

The school’s own ‘Race For Life’ event was organised by 20 leaders from year 10 who helped collect sponsorship details and the money raised, as well as marshalling the run.

Stacey Billingham, head of physical education at the Lodge Lane school, said: “Race for Life is a great addition to the school programme and the buzz around the school leading up to the day was incredible.

“The whole school supported the event and it was a real team effort, and a great afternoon for our pupils and staff, all whilst raising money for a seriously good cause.

“I would like to express my thanks to a wonderful group of girls who helped organise the event, who clearly have a desire to make a difference to their school community.”

After adding up all the donations and sponsorship money, the school managed to raise a staggering £12,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Billingham added: “I cannot express my admiration for our amazing pupils. We truly have inspirational pupils at Summerhill and I am so proud to see so many get involved.”
